Coinbase to launch 24/7 BTC, ETH futures in US
Coinbase announced its plans to offer 24/7 trading for Bitcoin and Ether futures to US residents, expanding its existing derivatives offerings. The exchange will also introduce perpetual futures trading, which allows for indefinite contract durations. Currently, much of the crypto derivatives market operates outside the US, leading American traders to conform to fixed trading hours and expiration dates, resulting in potential inefficiencies. This launch comes amidst regulatory uncertainty, as many exchanges prohibit US residents from trading perpetual futures due to compliance issues. Coinbase is working with regulatory authorities to ensure that these new offerings meet legal requirements. The US derivatives market's competition comes from firms like the CME Group, which has recorded substantial trading volumes but limits trading to six days a week. The crypto derivatives market saw a monthly trading volume of $1.3 trillion in September 2023, indicating a significant expansion compared to traditional spot markets.
