Breaking Bad Star's X Account Hacked to Promote Memecoin Scam
Breaking Bad star caught in memecoin scandal
Dean Norris, famed for his role as Hank Schrader in Breaking Bad, fell victim to a cyberattack that hijacked his X account to promote a fraudulent memecoin named DEAN. The token, allegedly using Norris’s likeness in a pump-and-dump scheme, has left fans and Reddit users furious.
In a video posted to his restored account on Jan. 26, Norris slammed the scammers, calling the memecoin a “complete, fake scam.” He also addressed backlash from Reddit users, angrily stating, “Go fuck yourselves,” in response to accusations.
The hackers had shared a manipulated photo of Norris holding a sign with the token’s ticker and launch date, along with a video suggesting his endorsement. The video raised suspicions, with some Reddit users speculating it might be an AI deepfake or a misused Cameo clip—Norris is an active user of the platform, where fans can pay for personalized videos.
Blockchain tracker DexScreener revealed that DEAN briefly surged to a market cap of $8.43 million on Jan. 25 before plummeting by over 96%, now sitting under $60,000.
Norris clarified he rarely uses X and doesn’t have a Telegram account. He only realized the breach after friends alerted him. This marks the second time his account has been hacked for crypto fraud.
The incident comes amid a wave of memecoin schemes, including a recent launch tied to President Donald Trump that reached a staggering $9 billion market cap within hours. These scams highlight the growing threat of digital impersonation in the crypto space, leaving victims like Norris caught in the crossfire of cybercrime and public scrutiny.
