World Vision first nonprofit to trade crypto in South Korea after ban lifted
World Vision Korea has become the first nonprofit organization to sell cryptocurrency in South Korea following the recent lifting of a ban on institutional crypto trading. The organization liquidated approximately $1,500 worth of Ether, which was donated by users on the Upbit exchange during a campaign aimed at providing educational supplies to underprivileged children. As of June 1, new regulations allow nonprofits and exchanges to trade cryptocurrencies, contingent on maintaining real-name accounts and compliance with anti-money laundering laws. Nonprofits must have a minimum of five years of audited financial history to engage in crypto transactions, while exchanges can only sell crypto to cover operational costs within set limits. This move comes at a time when the trading volume of leading exchanges like Upbit has declined significantly due to market downturns. The Financial Services Commission plans to expand these trading permissions to publicly listed companies later in the year, reflecting a growing acceptance of digital assets within the South Korean financial landscape.
