Who's the Next Pope? Top AI Models Don't Agree With Prediction Markets
In anticipation of the upcoming papal conclave following Pope Francis's death, a study evaluated predictions from 13 advanced AI models about the potential next pope. Most AIs favored Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, recognizing his communication skills and alignment with the progressive policies of Pope Francis. In contrast, prediction markets like Myriad and Polymarket indicated Cardinal Pietro Parolin as the frontrunner, highlighting different analytical frameworks between AIs and human bettors. While Tagle is a strong candidate, Parolin has a slight edge in betting odds, suggesting a preference for consensus candidates in the betting realm. This divergence may stem from the limited public data available to AI, as well as the complex nature of personal relationships and discernment within the conclave decision-making process. Ultimately, while many AI models see Tagle as the ideal pope, the decision remains uncertain until the College of Cardinals convenes. Any resemblance to market predictions indicates various factors influencing outcomes, suggesting that the future papacy may lie in compromise over individual preference.
