Web3 active developers drop nearly 40% in one year
The number of weekly active developers in the Web3 space has declined by approximately 40% over the past year, with a notable drop from 12,380 on March 17, 2024, to around 7,600 on March 16, 2025. This decline, documented by the analytics platform Artemis Terminal, highlights a significant shift in developer engagement amidst what some are calling 'narrative-led' developments in the crypto industry. Optimism contributor Binji Pande emphasized that the drop indicates a shift in focus away from genuine utility and innovation. He called for a return to fostering environments conducive to meaningful on-chain activity. In contrast, developer Ben Ward noted that the current crypto landscape is largely dominated by protocols delivering limited product-market fit, particularly in areas such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and memecoins, which have seen a surge in popularity but lack sustainability. The conversation reveals a growing consensus on the need to support real development and encourage teams to create products that resonate with users, rather than just focusing on speculative ventures.
