US Tourist Says Bitcoin, XRP Worth $123K Stolen After Ride With Fake Uber in London
A U.S. tourist lost over $123,000 in cryptocurrency after being drugged and abducted by a fake Uber driver in London. Jacob Irwin-Cline, from Portland, Oregon, was robbed following a night out in Soho. After calling an Uber, he was intercepted by a driver who knew his name. Instead of the Toyota Prius he expected, he entered a dark sedan. The driver allegedly offered him a cigarette that contained scopolamine, a sedative causing suggestibility. Under its influence, Irwin-Cline disclosed his phone passcode and crypto account details, which allowed the thief to access his digital wallet before abandoning him in an unfamiliar area. His losses included $72,000 in XRP and around $50,000 in Bitcoin. Authorities are investigating the rising trend of physical attacks on cryptocurrency holders in Europe, with no arrests having been made so far.
