An American tourist in the UK, Jacob Irwin-Cline, was drugged and robbed of $123,000 in Bitcoin by a fake Uber driver. After a night out in London, Cline called for an Uber but mistakenly left with a different private driver who resembled an Uber. The driver offered him a cigarette, believed to be laced with scopolamine, which caused Cline to pass out for about 30 minutes. Upon waking, he discovered his cellphone, containing private keys to his crypto accounts, had been stolen along with his funds. This incident adds to a rising trend of violent crimes targeting cryptocurrency investors, with several kidnappings reported in recent weeks. Law enforcement has seen a spike in extortion and ransom cases involving crypto industry figures, signifying serious safety concerns within the community.
