US Prosecutors to pursue ex-SafeMoon CEO case despite DOJ memo
US prosecutors will continue their case against Braden John Karony, the former CEO of SafeMoon, despite a recent memo from the Justice Department suggesting a shift away from crypto enforcement. The DOJ memo, issued on April 7, advocated for a policy of not prosecuting certain cryptocurrency cases. In a court filing on April 18, U.S. Attorney John Durham stated that his office will move forward with the trial against Karony, who faces serious charges including securities fraud conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy. Karony was originally indicted in October 2023, and while his defense argued for a potential delay in the trial amidst shifts in regulatory enforcement, the judge has set the jury selection to begin on May 5. Despite the DOJ's changes and the SEC's recent actions indicating a softer approach to crypto regulations, Karony remains scheduled for trial, maintaining his not guilty plea and currently free on a $3 million bond since February 2024.
