Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old man from Virginia, was sentenced to over 30 years in prison for funding the Islamic State (ISIS) with $185,000 in cryptocurrency. Chhipa collected and transferred money to assist female ISIS members in Syria, facilitating their escape from prison camps. Between October 2019 and October 2022, he used social media to gather funds and traveled to accept donations personally. Chhipa attempted to evade the FBI by trying to flee the country and taking steps to obscure his actions. He was arrested after an Interpol Notice was issued during his attempts to escape. The U.S. Attorney emphasized that financing terrorism leads to harsh penalties, as highlighted by Chhipa's substantial sentence, illustrating a firm stance against terrorism funding.
