US lawmaker proposes crypto ATMs in federal buildings
Rep. Lance Gooden, a Texas member of the US House of Representatives, has proposed the installation of cryptocurrency ATMs in federal buildings across the United States. In a letter to the acting administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA), Gooden argued that these ATMs would serve as an educational resource and reflect advancements in financial technology, citing alignment with President Donald Trump's goals. While the GSA may allow space for ATMs from federal credit unions, it remains uncertain whether the acting administrator has the authority to include private digital asset ATMs. Gooden, a supporter of Trump, has no known investments in cryptocurrency since taking office. The proposal comes amid legislative efforts, such as the Crypto ATM Fraud Prevention Act introduced by Senator Dick Durbin to combat fraud associated with crypto ATMs, particularly affecting senior citizens. It remains unclear whether further Congressional action is required for the installation of these ATMs, as the authority of the GSA administrator in this matter is not definitively established.
