US Indicts Iranian National for Operating Nemesis Darknet Marketplace
A U.S. grand jury has indicted Iranian national Behrouz Parsarad for running the Nemesis darknet marketplace from 2021 to 2024, which facilitated the sale of illicit drugs and other illegal services. The platform reportedly attracted over 150,000 users and processed approximately 400,000 orders. Notably, around 13.75% of these orders were for stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine, while opioids constituted 4.25%. In March 2024, authorities seized Nemesis’s servers and shut it down. Parsarad faces serious charges, including money laundering, and could face a life sentence if convicted. Additionally, U.S. sanctions have been placed on him, prohibiting his business dealings with U.S. entities. Although authorities have closed Nemesis, Parsarad is reportedly considering relaunching a similar service. Observers note that operating such a large marketplace likely required a network of collaborators, yet no other individuals have been charged in connection with Nemesis.
