The US Justice Department (DOJ) announced on March 27 that it has confiscated over $200,000 in cryptocurrency linked to the militant group Hamas. The seized amount totals $201,400 and was found in at least 17 digital wallets associated with fundraising operations controlled by Hamas. These funds were allegedly laundered through various virtual currency exchanges and transactions, enabling the group to transfer over $1.5 million in digital assets since October 2024. The DOJ's actions follow sanctions imposed in January 2024 by the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control against networks facilitating crypto transactions for Hamas. Despite increased scrutiny, a 2023 Chainalysis report highlighted that terrorist organizations like Hamas have only minimally utilized cryptocurrency compared to traditional fiat methods for financing their operations, prompting discussions about the need for more regulation in the crypto industry.
