A U.S. federal judge has paused a lawsuit filed by 18 state attorney generals and the DeFi Education Fund against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), following a change in SEC leadership that may resolve the case. Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove ordered a 60-day stay on April 16, indicating that the SEC's new leadership might lead to a resolution. The SEC had previously stated that the new leadership could potentially resolve the case, which centered on allegations of overreach in targeting crypto exchanges. The plaintiffs, comprising attorney generals from several states, argued that without Congressional authorization, the SEC was attempting to assume regulatory authority over the states through enforcement actions. The pause comes as the SEC appoints a new chair, with the previous chair, Gary Gensler, being replaced. Concurrently, the DeFi Education Fund and other groups dropped a separate lawsuit against the IRS regarding the constitutionality of reporting requirements for DeFi transactions, citing mootness after a bill revoking those requirements was signed into law by President Trump.
