US court pauses state AGs' suit against SEC after agency’s leadership change
A US federal judge has granted a 60-day pause on a lawsuit brought by 18 state attorneys general and the DeFi Education Fund against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This decision was made on April 16, following a request from all parties involved, who believe that the recent change in SEC leadership could render the case moot. The SEC indicated in a filing that this situation might allow for a resolution of the lawsuit under the new leadership. The plaintiffs—Republican state officials—had accused the SEC of overreach in targeting cryptocurrency exchanges, claiming it lacked the authority to issue its enforcement actions without congressional permission. Alongside this development, the DeFi Education Fund and other crypto advocacy groups decided to withdraw their lawsuit against the IRS regarding the controversial 'DeFi broker rule,' as that case also became moot after legislative actions. This pause reflects ongoing shifts in regulatory approaches within the cryptocurrency sector.
