Ukraine arrests alleged cryptojacker for breaching 5K accounts
Ukrainian police have arrested a 35-year-old man from the Poltava region, accusing him of breaching the accounts of an international hosting company to mine cryptocurrency. Police allege that since 2018, the man exploited weaknesses in various companies' online security, illegally accessing over 5,000 customer accounts. His actions reportedly caused the hosting company to suffer losses estimated at over $4.4 million. During a search, authorities confiscated computer equipment, mobile phones, and crypto wallets, indicating his involvement in hacker forums. The accused faces charges that could lead to a prison sentence of up to 15 years. A pre-trial investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges in the future. Just last April, a similar case revealed a cryptojacking operation that defrauded cloud computing providers of around $970,000.
