UK NCA Officer Charged Over Alleged Bitcoin Theft in 2017
A UK National Crime Agency (NCA) officer, Paul Chowles, has been charged with the theft of 50 Bitcoin in 2017, valued at approximately $77,000 at that time. The current value of this amount has surged to around $4 million. Chowles, 42, from Bristol, faces 15 criminal charges related to the alleged theft, which reportedly occurred during an investigation into online organized crime. The Crown Prosecution Service stated that Chowles is charged with multiple counts including concealing and converting criminal property. He is set to appear at the Liverpool Magistrates' Court on April 25, 2025. Meanwhile, the NCA continues its efforts against serious and organized crime, particularly in the realm of cybercrime and economic offenses. This incident raises significant concerns regarding integrity within law enforcement, particularly in handling digital currencies.
