UK NCA Officer Charged Over Alleged Bitcoin Theft in 2017
A UK National Crime Agency (NCA) officer, Paul Chowles, has been charged with allegedly stealing 50 Bitcoin in 2017 during an investigation into online organized crime. At the time of the theft, the Bitcoin was valued at approximately $77,000, but its current worth is around $4 million. Chowles, 42, faces 15 criminal charges, including 11 counts of concealing or converting criminal property, three counts of acquiring or possessing criminal property, and one count of theft. He is slated to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on April 25, 2025. Malcolm McHaffie from the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that there should be no reporting that could jeopardize the ongoing legal proceedings.
