The U.S. Department of Justice announced the seizure of $201,400 in cryptocurrencies designated for Hamas. Authorities confiscated a cryptocurrency wallet containing $89,900 along with three accounts totaling $111,500, which were implicated in laundering over $1.5 million for the militant group since October 2024. U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. emphasized the commitment to disrupt funding for Hamas through the cryptocurrency medium. The seized funds were allegedly linked to a group chat facilitating donations through an encrypted platform, with various crypto exchanges involved in laundering the money. The operation reflects increasing scrutiny by U.S. authorities on the usage of cryptocurrencies for illicit financing. Assistant Director David J. Scott from the FBI noted that seizing such assets is a key tool in counter-terrorism efforts. This instance follows prior actions by Israeli authorities that targeted digital asset accounts aiding Hamas and other extremist groups.
