Trump plans to pick a16z head of policy Brian Quintenz as CFTC chair
President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to nominate Brian Quintenz, currently the head of policy at a16z’s crypto division, as the next chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This information came to light through a document submitted to the White House. If confirmed, Quintenz is anticipated to advocate for pro-crypto policies and position the CFTC as the leading regulatory body for the cryptocurrency industry, potentially overshadowing the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Quintenz has experience within the CFTC, having served as a Republican commissioner from 2016 to 2020, where he endorsed the integration of digital asset derivatives into federal regulations. He has previously criticized the SEC for its inconsistent stance on Ether, emphasizing that the legal status of ETH had been acknowledged as a non-security asset. Alongside Quintenz, Trump has nominated Jonathan Gould as Comptroller of the Currency and Jonathan McKernan as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. a16z is recognized as one of the largest venture capital firms in the crypto sector, having invested in numerous startups throughout the industry.
