Trump administration reportedly shutters DOJ’s crypto enforcement team
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has reportedly disbanded the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET), a unit established to target platforms enabling criminal activity related to cryptocurrencies. The disbandment was revealed in a memo from Deputy General Todd Blanche, who criticized the previous administration's approach of regulation through prosecution. He emphasized that the DOJ is not a digital assets regulator. Initiated in February 2022, the NCET aimed to dismantle the financial networks supporting cybercriminal activities. This decision is effective immediately and reflects efforts to align with Trump’s executive order reshaping US crypto policy. Despite Trump’s previous pro-crypto campaign promises, concerns have arisen regarding potential conflicts of interest due to his family's involvement in crypto projects like the World Liberty Financial DeFi protocol and the Official Trump memecoin, leading to scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers.
