Tornado Cash Developer Alexey Pertsev Leaving Prison on Supervised Release
Alexey Pertsev, a developer of Tornado Cash, will be released from prison with an electronic monitor as he appeals his money laundering conviction related to the cryptocurrency mixer. Pertsev has been in detention since 2022 after being sentenced to 64 months in prison by a Dutch court for facilitating money laundering through Tornado Cash. His lawyer confirmed that he will now have the conditions to work on his appeal. Pertsev expressed mixed feelings about his release, noting it is not true freedom but an improvement over prison. The prosecution of Pertsev has sparked controversy among privacy advocates, who argue that he is being targeted for writing code rather than any wrongdoing. The case follows a U.S. federal appeals court ruling that the sanctions against Tornado Cash were unlawful. Meanwhile, another co-founder of Tornado Cash, Roman Storm, is facing separate prosecution in the U.S., with his legal defense supported by organizations concerned about the implications of holding developers liable for the actions of users.
