This year's top ETF strategy? Shorting Ether — Bloomberg Intelligence
According to Bloomberg Intelligence analysts, shorting Ether has emerged as the top-performing ETF strategy in 2025. The ProShares UltraShort Ether ETF (ETHD) and T Rex 2X Inverse Ether Daily Target ETF (ETQ) have shown remarkable gains, rising approximately 247% and 219% year-to-date, respectively. In contrast, Ether has seen a decline of about 54% within the same period. These leveraged ETFs use financial derivatives to inversely track the performance of Ether, amplifying volatility. Despite Ethereum being the leading blockchain with around $46 billion in total value locked, its token has suffered due to a significant drop in revenue following the Dencun upgrade, which reduced fee revenues by approximately 95%. This situation highlights the challenges faced by Ethereum in maintaining its network's revenue and usability, particularly for layer-2 scaling solutions. The future of Ethereum's performance will depend heavily on its ability to efficiently support these layer-2 technologies. Overall, the current market landscape presents a tumultuous outlook for Ether and its ecosystem.
