Star Atlas, a sci-fi interplanetary MMORPG, is advancing towards its full launch since its 2021 white paper release. Currently, players can access a web-based game, SAGE (Star Atlas Golden Era), while awaiting the immersive 3D version. CEO Michael Wagner noted that the project is resilient despite market challenges, recovering well after the FTX fallout. A recent patch introduced Galia mode, allowing single-player exploration across barren planets. While it lacks content at this stage, the graphics and space physics received positive feedback. Other planned features include Fleet Command, mining without crypto rewards initially, and various gameplay modes such as team deathmatch and extraction shooter. Wagner emphasizes the importance of a robust game economy within blockchain gaming, countering the notion that gameplay should be the sole focus. While ambitions are high, similar projects like Star Citizen have faced criticism over lengthy development times. Future expansions will include a companion app, ship customization, and PVE/PVP modes, with a focus on desktop PC release first, though console options may follow. Star Atlas is available for exploration via its public Discord server.
