South Korean actor Hwang Jung-eum has sparked controversy after admitting in court to embezzling $3.1 million from her own agency to invest in cryptocurrency. The scandal led to her segments being cut from the final episode of the reality show 'Because I’m Single,' produced by SBS Plus. Following the admission at the Jeju District Court, her agency, which she fully owns, faced legal scrutiny under Korea’s Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes. Hwang expressed regret, stating her investment decision was hasty and not well-considered, aiming to grow her company. Advertisers, including Daesang Wellife Nucare, withdrew their support, canceling promotional content featuring the actor and removing her from campaigns. Despite her claims that some funds came from her personal income, the legal implications and public backlash have been significant, affecting her professionally and personally as she also faces an ongoing divorce. A further hearing is scheduled for August.
