Silk Road founder’s 300 Bitcoin payday unlikely ‘self donation’
Ross Ulbricht’s recent receipt of 300 Bitcoin has raised questions about its source, as blockchain researcher ZachXBT suggests it is unlikely to be a self-donation. Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road, received these funds to a wallet requesting donations. The wallets involved were active during 2014 and 2019, while Ulbricht was imprisoned, leading ZachXBT to argue against the theory that these might be hidden profits from Silk Road. He noted that both wallets were flagged in compliance tools and had been inactive before recently depositing Bitcoin into a mixing service called Jambler. This suggests the funds originated from other sources rather than Ulbricht's past activities. Additionally, wallets connected to Ulbricht are still holding substantial amounts of Bitcoin, further indicating that the new funds are unlikely to be a self-donation. Ulbricht was convicted in 2015 and is still serving his sentence, having served over a decade of his 40-year sentence.
