Self-Driving Waymo Cars Torched During ICE Protest in Los Angeles
Several Waymo self-driving taxis were vandalized and set on fire during a protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles. The incident occurred as demonstrators expressed their discontent with the government's actions, including the deployment of National Guard troops to the region. Videos shared on social media showed protesters climbing on top of the vehicles, breaking windows, and spray-painting them. At least five cars were severely damaged and set ablaze. As the situation escalated, officials warned about the potential release of toxic chemicals from the burning lithium-ion batteries. A spokesperson for Waymo confirmed that the company temporarily removed its vehicles from downtown Los Angeles for safety reasons but intends to continue operating in the broader area, pending further assessments. The LAPD has not yet commented on the matter, and Waymo is cooperating with local authorities in response to this incident.
