Sei Foundation explores acquisition of 23andMe to secure genetic data
The Sei Foundation announced its interest in acquiring the genetic testing company 23andMe after the latter filed for bankruptcy in the US on March 24. This development raised significant concerns regarding the privacy of genetic data for 15 million Americans. In a statement made on March 27, the foundation emphasized that acquiring 23andMe could help ensure users' data sovereignty by transferring the company's genetic information to the blockchain, thereby returning ownership to the users through encrypted transfers. The bankruptcy filing by 23andMe raised alarms about the vulnerability of personal genomic data, prompting regulatory figures like New York’s Attorney General Letitia James to encourage users to demand the deletion of their personal data. Following the announcement from the Sei Foundation, the price of the Sei (SEI) token saw a brief increase of approximately 3%.
