SEC is waiting for a chair before setting crypto agenda — Hester Peirce
Hester Peirce, head of the SEC's crypto task force, stated that the agency will refrain from establishing a regulatory agenda for cryptocurrencies until a Senate-confirmed chair is appointed. During a panel discussion on February 11, Peirce indicated that it would be premature to set regulations without proper leadership. After Gary Gensler's departure on January 20, Mark Uyeda took on the role of acting chair, but President Donald Trump's nomination of Paul Atkins is pending Senate approval. Peirce acknowledged Uyeda’s efforts but emphasized that a confirmed chairman would likely want to set his own agenda. Additionally, the SEC is exploring pathways for rulemaking in the cryptocurrency space following an appellate court’s comments on its previous decisions. The SEC has requested delays in certain enforcement actions, indicating that progress in regulatory frameworks is ongoing. Currently, the SEC comprises Peirce and Uyeda, both Republicans, alongside Democratic Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw, with uncertainty about filling a fifth commissioner position upon Atkins' confirmation.
