SEC is waiting for a chair before setting crypto agenda
Hester Peirce, head of the SEC's crypto task force, stated that the agency will postpone setting a regulatory agenda for cryptocurrencies until the Senate confirms a new chair. Currently, Mark Uyeda serves as the acting chair after Gary Gensler's departure on January 20. Donald Trump has nominated Paul Atkins, a former SEC commissioner, for the chair position, but the Senate Banking Committee has yet to consider his nomination. Peirce noted that while working continues, a definitive agenda would ideally come from a confirmed chair. The SEC is also exploring rulemaking for digital assets, especially following a recent appellate court decision that challenged the commission's decision-making processes. The SEC's efforts have included requesting delays in enforcement actions in various jurisdictions related to cryptocurrencies. It remains uncertain if Trump will nominate a fifth commissioner should Atkins be confirmed, as the current SEC is comprised of Peirce and Uyeda, both Republicans, alongside Democratic Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw.
