SEC Files for $50 Million Settlement With Ripple Over XRP Lawsuit
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially settled its long-standing lawsuit against Ripple Labs over the company’s sales of XRP, a popular cryptocurrency. The SEC initially sued Ripple in December 2020, claiming they sold unregistered securities worth $1.3 billion. After multiple court rulings, including a significant one in 2023 that determined some XRP sales did not constitute securities, Ripple has agreed to pay a $50 million fine to conclude the case. This settlement allows Ripple to reclaim over $75 million from escrow. The settlement marks a shift in regulatory approach towards cryptocurrency firms, especially under the current SEC leadership, contrasting with previous strict actions. Ripple's XRP has reacted positively to the news, showing an increase in price shortly after the settlement announcement.
