Ripple says XRP Ledger back online after hourlong network halt
Ripple's XRP Ledger experienced a network halt lasting over an hour on February 4, 2025, during which validations could not be published. The issue was confirmed by Ripple's chief technology officer, David Schwartz, who noted that the consensus was running, but the network had drifted apart due to the lack of validations. Validator operators had to manually intervene to reestablish a coordinated ledger stream. Schwartz indicated that there was a possibility of spontaneous recovery as few validators had to reboot the network. Throughout the incident, Ripple assured that customer funds remained safe. The halt raised concerns about the centralized nature of the XRP Ledger, especially in contrast to competing blockchains like Ethereum, which has a significantly larger number of validators. Following the network's disruption, XRP's value fluctuated, hitting a low of $2.45 but rebounding to $2.53 shortly thereafter. This incident is under investigation to determine the root cause and implications of the halt.
