Ed Suman, a retired artist, lost over $2 million in cryptocurrency after being scammed by someone impersonating a Coinbase support representative. Suman, aged 67 and a former fabricator of high-profile art installations, had invested in cryptocurrency as part of his retirement plan. He accumulated 17.5 Bitcoin and 225 Ether, storing his funds in a Trezor Model One hardware wallet to mitigate the risk of exchange hacks. In March, he received a text message that appeared to be from Coinbase, which led to a phone call from a man claiming to be a Coinbase security representative. The caller manipulated Suman into believing his wallet was at risk, instructing him to enter his seed phrase on a fake website. After a second call nine days later, all his cryptocurrency holdings were drained. This incident coincided with a major data breach affecting Coinbase, where customer support staff in India were bribed to gain sensitive user data.
