A Bitcoin user accidentally paid 0.75 BTC ($70,500) as a transaction fee due to a panic-induced replace-by-fee (RBF) error. The transaction occurred on April 8 and involved sending 0.48 Bitcoin ($37,770) while mistakenly including 0.2 BTC as change in the fee calculation. The initial transaction had a conservative fee, which the user attempted to raise significantly in a subsequent transaction, inadvertently setting it to a level that essentially made it the total payment before being confirmed. Crypto forensics firm AMLBot noted the mistakes could stem from confusion over fee formats or an error in the automated script used by the wallet. This highlights the risks associated with the RBF feature in Bitcoin transactions, where users can raise fees on unconfirmed transactions to prioritize them for inclusion in blocks. RBF, while potentially beneficial, is often misunderstood and can lead to substantial financial losses if not handled correctly.
