OpenAI’s Altman appears to reject Musk’s $97.4B bid for control
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has seemingly rejected Elon Musk’s $97.4 billion bid to acquire the AI company. On February 10, it was reported that a Musk-led group of investors submitted a bid to OpenAI’s board of directors. Altman publicly responded on X with a humorous counteroffer to buy Twitter for $9.74 billion, referencing Musk’s 2022 acquisition for $44 billion. The contention between Musk and Altman stems from differing views on OpenAI’s future direction, with Altman advocating for a for-profit model, which Musk opposes. Musk and Altman were co-founders of OpenAI in 2015, and have faced legal disputes regarding the nonprofit’s operational promises. Musk's bid for OpenAI is reportedly backed by his AI company xAI, alongside various investment firms. Musk’s lawyer stated that the group is willing to increase its offer to ensure that the charity receives fair compensation for its potentially transformative technology, as they believe the shift towards profit undermines its charitable foundations.
