OpenAI has decided to maintain its nonprofit status and abandon plans to convert its for-profit unit into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). In a recent blog post, CEO Sam Altman clarified that although the company sought to create a for-profit entity to facilitate fundraising, they will continue to operate under nonprofit oversight. OpenAI's decision is a significant reversal from its previous position, which emphasized the necessity of a for-profit model for raising capital to support the substantial compute needs for AI development, anticipated to cost hundreds of billions of dollars. Altman stated that the nonprofit structure would not hinder OpenAI's ability to attract funding. Since its inception in 2015, OpenAI has aimed to combine a social mission with AI development. The for-profit unit established in 2019 has remained under nonprofit control. Controversy surrounding governance has been present, including legal disputes involving cofounder Elon Musk, who has accused Altman of manipulation regarding the organization’s original intentions. With revenue predictions set to reach $29.4 billion by 2026, OpenAI continues to secure significant investments, including a recent $40 billion fundraising round from Softbank.
