Hugging Face has launched Reachy 2, the first commercially available open-source humanoid robot, priced at $70,000. Aimed at research institutions, Reachy 2 is already in use at esteemed labs including Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. This robot boasts advanced features such as stereo vision, microphones, speakers, and lidar, with each arm having seven degrees of freedom, allowing for versatile movements. It runs on Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) and can be accessed via a Python-based software interface. Hugh Face’s co-founder Clément Delangue noted that while open-source robots exist, Reachy 2 marks a significant landmark as the first manufactured version. This initiative reflects Hugging Face’s aim to make robotics accessible, advocating for 'open, affordable, and hackable' robotic solutions. The robot's features enable it to perform real-time object detection and assist in tasks such as sorting objects without prior training. This marks a strategic expansion into robotics for Hugging Face following its acquisition of Pollen Robotics, the company behind the Reachy platform, which originated in 2020.
