Fraudulent tech workers linked to North Korea are expanding their operations to blockchain companies in the UK, as reported by Google Threat Intelligence Group. Amid increased scrutiny and right-to-work challenges in the US, these workers have created a global network of fake personas to secure positions in non-US firms. According to GTIG adviser Jamie Collier, this suggests the development of a global support network for their continued activities. North Korean workers have infiltrated projects involving advanced blockchain technologies, such as Solana and Anchor, posing as legitimate remote employees to generate revenue for their regime. The U.S. recently charged two North Korean nationals involved in fraudulent IT schemes affecting numerous American companies. Reports also indicate a rise in hacking attempts from North Korea, including tactics like fake Zoom calls to steal sensitive information. As blockchain continues to innovate, the risks from these infiltrating actors remain a significant concern for the industry.
