No questions asked Bitcoin launderer gets 6 years in prison
Trung Nguyen, a man from Danvers, Massachusetts, has been sentenced to six years in prison for running an unlicensed cash-to-Bitcoin conversion service called National Vending. Between September 2017 and October 2020, Nguyen utilized various methods learned from an online course to evade detection by authorities, posing as a vending machine company. He was found guilty after conducting multiple transactions with undercover officers, accepting cash and sending back Bitcoin while charging a commission. Prosecutors reported that he failed to register with the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and did not report suspicious transactions, which included significant sums from drug dealers and con artists. Nguyen was ordered to forfeit $1.5 million and will serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
