New Ethereum Proposal Wants to Make Running a Node Easier, Cheaper
Vitalik Buterin's new proposal aims to simplify running Ethereum nodes by allowing them to sync only essential data instead of the entire blockchain, reducing the required storage from over 1.3TB. This local-first design would enable users to maintain a local server without the hefty data load, making node operation feasible for average users with consumer hardware. Nodes would store only relevant data, pulling historical information from other nodes as needed, similar to a library system. This aligns with Ethereum's Pectra upgrade, which seeks to make nodes lighter and more accessible. Buterin emphasized the importance of personal nodes to prevent centralization and censorship risks within the Ethereum network. While the proposal addresses significant overhead concerns, it poses challenges regarding data availability and requires proper mechanisms for managing data requests.
