Mysten Labs is set to launch Walrus, a decentralized storage platform designed for large binary files (blobs), on March 27, 2025. This platform aims to provide programmable file storage for the gaming-focused layer 1 chain Sui, as well as for developers using Solana, Ethereum, and others. Currently, Walrus has 833.33 TB of total storage, with around 78,890 GB utilized across more than 4.5 million blobs, capable of storing various file types such as videos, images, and PDFs. The mainnet launch comes alongside their tokenomics for the WAL token. Utilizing a delegated proof of stake mechanism, storage nodes will compete to offer competitive pricing for file storage. Early adopters like the NFT project Flatlander are already benefiting from Walrus’s storage capabilities. Mysten Labs emphasizes that Walrus could enhance the integrity and availability of decentralized apps that currently rely on traditional web hosting. As decentralized solutions gain traction, Walrus is positioned to be more efficient and robust compared to existing options, potentially revolutionizing the landscape of blockchain gaming and other applications.
