MSTR vs. MSTY: Growth or Income? A 12-Month Showdown
From April 2024 to April 2025, the performance of two investment products, Strategy (MSTR) and the YieldMax MSTR Option Income Strategy ETF (MSTY), diverged significantly. MSTR, which acts as a bitcoin proxy, yielded an impressive total return of +86% due to sharp increases in bitcoin value, growing a $1,000 investment to $1,895. Conversely, MSTY focused on generating income through a synthetic covered call strategy, producing a +59% return and reaching $1,591 despite distributing $36.53 in dividends across 13 months. However, MSTY faced a decline of 45% from its high, attributed to limited upside due to its call-writing strategy and reduced income as option premiums shrank. While both investments target MSTR’s performance, MSTR is positioned for high-risk growth tied to bitcoin, while MSTY provides monthly income, albeit with structural risks. Volatility in MSTR greatly influenced MSTY's performance, as asset value fluctuation impacted both option income and share price.
