Michigan lawmakers introduced four crypto-related bills, focusing on crypto in state retiree funds, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and mining at abandoned oil and gas sites. House Bill, introduced by Republican Representative Bill Schuette, seeks to amend the Public Employee Retirement System Investment Act, allowing the state treasurer to invest in cryptocurrencies with a market cap above $250 million, currently only Bitcoin and Ether meet this criterion. Another bipartisan bill, led by Representative Bryan Posthumus, would prevent the state from banning cryptocurrencies or advocating for a federal CBDC. Additionally, a bill sponsored by Democratic Representative Mike McFall proposes a Bitcoin mining program at abandoned oil and gas sites, requiring operators to submit legal documentation and operational plans. The fourth bill, also by McFall's group, aims to amend Michigan's income tax laws to include income from the proposed Bitcoin mining program.
