Metaplanet now holds more Bitcoin than El Salvador
Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has surpassed El Salvador in Bitcoin holdings, accumulating a total of 6,796 Bitcoin, valued at over $700 million. On May 12, the firm disclosed that it had purchased 1,241 Bitcoin for approximately $129 million, achieving its highest purchase price of 14.8 million yen ($101,843) per coin. Metaplanet began its Bitcoin acquisition strategy in April 2024 and has since become the largest holder of Bitcoin in Asia and the tenth largest globally. Meanwhile, El Salvador, which holds 6,714 Bitcoin worth around $642 million, remains the sixth-largest nation-state holder. Metaplanet's recent purchases, totaling 18,586 BTC in April and 18,925 BTC in March, indicate its aggressive strategy in accumulating Bitcoin. CEO Simon Gerovich highlighted the firm's growth, reflecting its ambitions to rival nation-states in the cryptocurrency market.
