Metaplanet Aims to Raise $5.3 Billion to Buy More Bitcoin
Japanese Bitcoin treasury Metaplanet plans to raise $5.3 billion by issuing 555 million shares through stock acquisition rights to augment its existing Bitcoin holdings. The company currently holds 8,888 BTC valued at approximately $934 million. This strategic investment reflects a growing trend among businesses to increase their Bitcoin reserves, similar to policies adopted by firms like MicroStrategy. CEO Simon Gerovich noted this stock issuance would occur at a premium, marking a notable shift from typical financing strategies that often feature discounts. Metaplanet aims to acquire a total of 210,000 Bitcoin, or roughly 1% of the total Bitcoin supply, by 2027. The company's shares surged by 24% in trading following the announcement, echoing wider investor interest in Bitcoin as a capital formation method.
