Metaplanet Aims to Raise $5.3 Billion to Buy More Bitcoin
Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, is planning to raise $5.3 billion to expand its holdings of Bitcoin. The firm currently holds 8,888 BTC, valued at approximately $934 million. The company intends to issue 555 million shares through stock acquisition rights, offering them at above the market price, which deviates from the common practice of a discount of 8 to 10 percent. CEO Simon Gerovich indicated that this pricing strategy was an unprecedented move. Metaplanet has transitioned from its core hotel and technology businesses to focus on Bitcoin accumulation, aiming to acquire 210,000 Bitcoin by 2027, which is around 1% of the total supply. This strategy mirrors that of firms like MicroStrategy, which have also adopted Bitcoin as a primary asset.
