Meta has signed a 20-year agreement to secure 1.1 gigawatts of nuclear energy from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois, aiming to power its data centers and artificial intelligence initiatives. The deal allows Meta to ensure a reliable energy source as it expands its AI capabilities, which are increasingly energy-intensive. The company emphasized the importance of nuclear power for providing steady electricity and plans to start utilizing this energy in 2027. The partnership also supports the local economy by preserving over 1,100 jobs and contributing $13.5 million annually in tax revenue, without needing state support through the Zero Emission Credit program. Previously facing closure in 2017 due to financial struggles, the plant was saved by legislation aimed at supporting renewable energy projects. Meta's initiative highlights the growing energy demands of AI technologies, projected to double by 2030, as indicated by the International Energy Agency. Additionally, Meta is exploring partnerships with other nuclear operators to support its sustainability goals.
