Meta gets EU regulator nod to train AI with social media content
Meta has received approval from the EU's data regulator to utilize publicly shared content from its social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, for training its artificial intelligence models. The company emphasized that it needs a diverse range of data to enhance its AI models' understanding of the varied dialects, humor, and culture present in European communities. While public content from adults can be used, private messages and data from users under 18 remain off-limits. Users can opt-out of having their data used for AI training through an accessible form provided by Meta. This approval follows a review that paused Meta's AI training plans last July due to privacy concerns. Meta claims its training approach aligns with legal obligations established by EU regulators, who have previously scrutinized AI training practices related to user data privacy. The approval is in line with practices adopted by other tech giants like Google and OpenAI.
