Malaysian police recently conducted a raid on an illegal Bitcoin mining operation in the Hulu Terengganu and Marang districts. Seizing 45 machines valued at approximately $52,145 (RM225,000), the operation was reportedly costing the national electricity provider around $8,342 (RM36,000) monthly in losses. This is part of a growing issue in Malaysia, which has suffered an estimated $722 million (RM3.4 billion) due to illegal mining activities since 2018. Police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin indicated that these syndicates were operating clandestinely from residential and commercial properties, tapping into the local electricity grid illegally. Although no arrests were made during the raid, the evidence has been collected for further investigation. While Bitcoin mining is legal in Malaysia, tampering with the power grid can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines.
