Major Supermarket Chain Spar to Launch Bitcoin Payments Across Switzerland
Spar supermarkets in Switzerland are set to roll out Bitcoin payments nationwide after a successful pilot in two locations. Shoppers will use QR codes powered by DFX Swiss’s OpenCryptoPay platform at checkout. This rollout marks one of the first major retail integrations of Bitcoin payments in Switzerland, following pilot tests in Zug. The initiative aims to make cryptocurrency a staple for everyday transactions. With over 600 businesses in Switzerland already accepting Bitcoin, this move is part of a broader trend towards crypto adoption in retail. The director of the Bitcoin Association Switzerland praised the ease of the payment method, indicating that if widely adopted, it could expand throughout the country. Spar’s expansion follows a global trend of integrating Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies into everyday economic activities, further positioning Switzerland as a hub for crypto commerce. Despite its prominence in the crypto space, there is ongoing debate in Switzerland about the feasibility of cryptocurrencies in national reserves, indicating that while adoption is growing, regulatory considerations are still paramount.
