Kuwait Government Issues Warning as 1,000 Sites Found Illegally Mining Cryptocurrency
The Kuwait Ministry of Interior has issued a warning regarding illegal cryptocurrency mining, revealing over 1,000 sites operating mining rigs, despite a ban since July 2023. The government identified these locations through abnormal electricity usage patterns, emphasizing that such activities are unlicensed and violate national law. The low electricity prices in Kuwait have contributed to this illegal activity, with reports indicating that some homes have consumption levels vastly exceeding typical usage. The Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy to monitor and address these activities. Illegal crypto mining has been linked to broader issues of public safety, causing power outages and disrupting essential services. The United Nations has also highlighted illegal mining as a tool for cybercrime syndicates, underlining the political and economic challenges presented by such activities. Authorities have urged violators to cease illegal operations or face prosecution under applicable laws.
